Storage Stars Referral Program – FAQ’s

Q: What is the Storage Stars Referral Program?
A: It's a program that rewards employees for referring qualified candidates who are hired and complete 90 days of employment.

Q: If I referred someone in the old system, do I need to resubmit?
A: Not necessarily.  Referrals submitted in the old system are valid for 6 months from the submittal date. Referrals submitted prior to 11/1/2025 would be expired so would need to be resubmitted.

‍Q: I referred someone on the old system and they were hired. Will I receive the new bonus award amount?
‍A:  New award amount will be applied to referral payouts after the new program launch date: 4/13/2026

Q: Who can participate in the referral program?
A: All active Public Storage employees except:

  • Employees with access to company sourcing tools (e.g., LinkedIn Recruiter)
  • Recruiting Staff
  • HR Directors
  • Hiring Managers may not refer a candidate that will report to them.
  • Employees directly involved in the hiring process for a job may not refer candidates to that job. This includes reviewing resumes, sourcing, interviewing, decision making, etc.
  • Any conflict-of-interest situations (to be determined by HR)

Q: What are the requirements for my referral to eligible?
A: All of the following:

  • You submitted the referral before the candidate applied
  • The candidate has not applied or been added to the system in the past 6 months
  • The candidate has not been referred in the past 6 months
  • The candidate has not worked at Public Storage in the past 24 months
  • The candidate completes 90 days of employment
  • Both you and the candidate are actively employed when the bonus is paid
  • The candidate is hired within 6 months of your referral submission

Q: What are the Storage Stars referral bonus amounts?
A: Bonus amounts vary by position type:

  • Property Manager and C3 Non-Exempt: $500*
  • District Manager: $5000
  • Corporate and C3 Exempt: $1500
  • Corporate Non-Exempt: $1000

*Enhanced for 2026

Q: Are the bonuses taxed?
A: Bonus amounts listed are net after taxes. Public Storage covers the taxes for you, so you receive the full advertised amount. You will see a line item in your deposit for the full, grossed up amount.

Q: When will I receive my bonus?
A: Bonuses are paid within two pay periods after your referral completes 90 days of employment.

Q: How do I submit a referral?

Q: Do I need to an email and/or phone # for my referral?

A: To send a link to your referral to apply you will need their email or mobile to send text message. You may also provide a link via another medium, if available.

Q: When should I send the link to my referral?
A: You should provide the link to your referral before they apply to Public Storage.

Q: How long is my referral valid?
A: Referrals are valid for 6 months

Q: How long does my referral have to apply after I submit them?
A: Your referral should apply shortly after you send them a link to ensure the position is still available.

Q: Can I submit a retroactive referral?
A: No, retroactive referrals are discouraged.

Q: Do both the referrer and the referred employee need to be employed when the bonus is paid?
A: Yes, both you and your referral must still be actively employed at the time the bonus is processed.

Q: Who do I contact if I have questions about the program?

Q: Who determines if my referral is eligible?
A: The Human Resources Department reviews all referrals and determines eligibility, including conflicts of interest.

Q: What if I do not want to use my mobile phone?
A: There is a web-based version that can be accessed via the Employee Referral page on our career site: PublicStorageJobs.com/Referrals

Q: My referral added my name to their application. Do I still need to submit them as a referral?
A: If your referral adds your name, be sure they use your name as it is in WorkDay to ensure it is recognized. If the name is not recognized the referral will not be credited.

Q: How do I track the progress of my referral?
A: Text Refer to 67000 and select the option to Track My Referrals & Payouts.

Q: What if I do not see my referral in the tracker?
A: Contact [email protected]. Provide the details of your referral including the referral’s name, email address, phone number, and the approximate date the referral was submitted.

Q: My co-worker and I both want to submit the same person, how can we both get credit?
A: Contact [email protected]. Provide details of the referral and why you would like to split it. Generally, referrals are not split but the request can be reviewed.

Q: I submitted my referral last year and they want to apply again. Do I need to resubmit?
A: Yes, send a new link for your referral to apply again to ensure all eligibility requirements are met.

Q: I told my Manager about a candidate and they want to hire them.  Do I still need to send a referral link?
A: Yes, you should send the link to your referral to apply to ensure you receive credit.

Q: Do I need to send my referral the link during my shift?
A: No. You can access the referral system and send links to referrals anytime.

Q: Can this program be changed or canceled?
A: Yes, Public Storage reserves the right to modify or cancel this program at any time, with or without notice.

Q: Can I refer someone who already applied without accepting my link?‍
A: Yes, but you only have 30 days from when they applied to do so.

  • Follow instructions on screen to input the email of your candidate's application*Please ensure you use the exact email they applied with.

Note: You must log the referral within 30 days of the application. We will unfortunately be unable to credit a referral being retroactively logged beyond 30 days of the candidate’s application date.

Q: My referral isn’t showing up in the dashboard

A: Your referral will only be in the system if:

  • You initiated the referral within the platform and your candidate accepted your unique referral link.
  • The candidate listed your name on their application,

Referrals made before launch or outside of this system will not show up in the platform for tracking.
